Understanding the complexities of dental pathology in pets has been a recent development. Many pet owners are unaware of the potential issues like gum disease, resorptive lesions, and the need for tooth extraction, which can cause significant discomfort and health concerns for their pets.
Dental issues can affect all pets, from dogs to cats. Our dental treatment services are available for all pets, providing tailored plans to address their specific oral health needs.
At Drovers Vet, we employ state-of-the-art dental equipment and techniques to ensure thorough dental exams, gum probing, and ultrasonic scaling. Our team is equipped to perform necessary extractions with care and precision, addressing issues such as abscesses, FORLs, fractures, and severe gum recession. We prioritise post-operative care and provide comprehensive dental prevention plans to maintain your pet's oral health.
Our comprehensive dental exams require anesthesia to thoroughly examine each tooth and assess gum health. We utilise advanced tools for gum probing to detect any loss of gum attachment and identify issues like resorptive lesions. Ultrasonic scaling effectively removes tartar, while polishing smooths tooth surfaces to deter plaque buildup. If extractions are necessary, our team performs them with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring the socket is properly sealed for optimal healing. We emphasise post-operative care, including medication instructions and dietary recommendations, alongside a tailored prevention plan to safeguard your pet's dental health.
A complete dental exam requires anaesthesia because it's impossible to thoroughly examine a conscious dog or cat's teeth. While awake, we can get a basic idea, but under anaesthesia, we can examine each tooth from all angles to identify any issues.
Gum probing allows us to assess if there's any loss of gum attachment to the teeth. Cats are particularly prone to resorptive lesions (FORLs), where tooth enamel is eaten away, similar to cavities in humans. Unfortunately, these lesions are painful and irreversible, often requiring tooth extraction.
Once we've assessed your pet's dental needs, we begin by using an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar from the tooth surface. Polishing follows, creating a smooth surface that makes it harder for plaque to accumulate, thereby delaying future tartar build-up.
If a tooth needs to be removed due to reasons like abscesses, fractures, severe gum recession, or loose teeth, we perform the extraction under anaesthesia. This process can be complex, especially for multi-rooted teeth, and may require suturing or sealing with a dental cement to ensure proper healing.
After treatment, our veterinarians or nurses will create a tailored prevention plan for your pet's ongoing dental care. They'll discuss this plan with you during discharge, providing information handouts to help you maintain good dental and oral health for your pet.
Proper dental care for pets is crucial, and our outpatient procedures ensure your pet can return home the same day. We'll explain any necessary post-operative medications, and dietary changes, and schedule a follow-up check-up after 10-14 days for pets who have had extractions.
From routine check-ups to advanced surgical procedures, our team of experienced veterinarians and dedicated staff is here to provide compassionate and comprehensive care for your furry family members.
Our state-of-the-art facility offers separate consultation rooms for dogs and cats, a fully equipped in-house laboratory, and specialised suites for surgery and dental care. For those tender moments, our uniquely designed Grief.
