Festive Do’s and Don’ts for your Pets
DON’T
- Feed your dog onions, chocolate, grapes, raisins or lollies – these are dangerous for dogs and will make them sick
- Let your pet scavenge in the bin for table scraps – corn cobs, cooked bones & stone fruit seeds if swallowed can cause intestinal obstructions. Cooked bones may also lodge in the pet’s mouth or throat.
- Feed your pet Christmas/New Year left over’s. This food may be too fatty/rich and may lead to gastritis i.e. vomiting & diarrhoea or even pancreatitis
- Let your kittens or cats play with twisty ties, tinsel, or any other small objects which may be swallowed.
DO
- Give them lots of attention, pats, an extra walk
- Include them in your family photos/videos for special memories
- Make sure they are up to date with vaccinations before going into kennels/catteries
- Make sure they are secure at home with lots of fresh drinking water, shelter etc. if you are out for the day
- See your vet before New Year’s Eve if they are likely to need some anti-anxiety medication due to fireworks or thunderstorms
- Give them a safe low fat treat or present their regular food in a novel way, such as making a treasure hunt
- Give them safe toys that can’t be easily swallowed or pulled apart
- Have a wonderful Christmas with your furry friends & family
